Blancpain is usually associated with two things. The first one is the slogan "Since 1735, there has never been a quartz Blancpain watch. And there never will be." And the fact that this company is one of the oldest Swiss companies – it was founded in 1735.
Some people think that between the ancient and the modern history of the brand there is a very big break of about 100 years. This is not true. In the middle of the XX century Blancpain presented one of the most legendary watches in its history and in the history of watch making.
In 1952 the brand received the order to produce diver’s wristwatches for military purposes. Engineers from Blancpain accepted the order and developed an absolutely new case that remained water resistant at the depth of fifty Fathoms – 91 meters. This depth in the 1950’s was considered to be safe for diving. Of course, some time later this limit was increased and there appeared new models that could work at greater depths, however, Fifty Fathoms from Blancpain became the first watch to dive to the maximum acceptable depth. In 1953 this watch became a part of official equipment for military divers.
Hands of diver’s watches of that time were usually coated with luminescent compound with atomic radiation. In the first Blancpain Fifty Fathoms models such compounds were used, however the engineers of the company soon replaced it with a safer coating, so the dial of the watch got the marking “Nonradioactive”.
The popularity Fifty Fathoms was very high and the watch soon draw the attention of the representatives of naval forces of other countries. Soon Fifty Fathoms watches became a part of equipment of military divers of such countries as Germany, Poland, Czech republic and even United States (Frogman department).
In 1955 Blancpain became a partner of Groupe d’Etudes et de Recherches Sous-Marines. Fifty Fathoms became the watch that was used in the expedition of Jacques-Yves Cousteau during which the famous The World Of Silence film was created.

In 2007 there was real triumph of Blancpain Fifty Fathoms watches, when the brand presented two new versions – Fifty Fathoms – a fly-back chronograph and a tourbillon.
The icon model turned into a magnificent example of Haute Horlogerie whose design is maximum similar to the design of Fifty Fathoms of 1953. Modern Fifty Fathoms come in white or yellow gold. The watch features waterproof case and the icon design that became the symbol of true manliness.
